Traditions can play a big part in your wedding (but only if you want them to). Here are some wedding traditions we still love to see, along with a few we don’t.
Paper Invitations – We feel that a paper invitation and RSVPs, sent in the mail (rather than email), sets the tone for the wedding and affirms the importance it deserves.
The Party – There are so many ways to celebrate the joining of two families, from simple cake and punch to a full-blown reception or something in between. However you plan to celebrate, do it with style and keep this tradition going strong.
Wedding Cake – While there are many alternatives, we love a beautiful and delicious wedding cake. Made from wheat, cakes were originally a symbol of fertility and prosperity. Thank goodness the tradition of throwing the cake at the bride hasn’t survived the times, because that’s how it used to go down.
Toasts – Keep them brief, but keep them. Have your people share a little history, a short, heartfelt story about the couple, and even a little humor.
Garter Removal and Toss – Keep the garter on your leg for private removal after the reception. Have an extra garter to put on a football and toss to the crowd.
Bouquet Toss – Instead of gathering All The Single Ladies, have an anniversary dance instead. Give your bouquet to the couple who have been married the longest. Have your photo taken with them and send them a copy in a nice frame.
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue – Something old represents continuity, something new offers optimism for the future, something borrowed symbolized borrowed happiness, and something blue represents love and fidelity. We think this tradition is lovely and a great way to begin your new lives together.
The definition of tradition is the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, but don’t feel the need to follow them if they have no personal meaning to you as a couple. In fact, it’s the perfect time to start your own.
